Parquet, laminate, tiles, carpet. Day after day – the same.
Think about what your child walks on during the day. In the morning – parquet in the bedroom. In the kitchen – tiles. In the living room – carpet. At kindergarten – linoleum. Outside – asphalt, with a shoe sole between it and the foot.
All these surfaces differ in colour and temperature, but they have one thing in common: they are flat. None of them asks the foot any question.
What surfaces used to be like
Grass after rain. Wet sand by the shore. Pine cones under a pine tree. Round river pebbles. Dry, lumpy earth. Forest moss. Each one different, each one asking for a different step – where to put the foot, how to shift your weight, when to slow down.
A modern home does not have this variety. Not because someone got it wrong – flat floors are simply easy to clean, safe and cheap to install.
What it means for the foot
On a flat surface every step is the same. The foot touches the floor with the whole sole, the toes stay still, there is nothing to search for. On an uneven surface it is the opposite: the toes spread, the heel looks for support, the body pauses for a moment to judge.

How to bring variety back into the room
